Start Date: September 30, 1994. Length: 12 months. NIDILRR Officer: Joseph Fenton, EdD. NIDILRR Funding: FY 94 $40,000. Objectives: To conduct an experimental study comparing the effectiveness and efficiency between a treatment-matching, substance abuse program and a traditional, substance abuse treatment program for people with chronic mental illness. Abstract: This project will: (1) compare the effectiveness and efficiency of a substance abuse treatment program based on treatment matching compared to a traditional, substance abuse treatment program; and (2) evaluate the psychometric properties of the Change Assessment Questionnaire (CAQ) specifically designed for dual-diagnosed clients. The results of this project could be of great value to health care and cost reduction. It is well recognized that substance abuse can undermine rehabilitation efforts and aggravate chronic health conditions, thus increasing associated, ongoing health care and related costs. Intervention to address substance abuse can significantly improve outcomes for persons with disabilities and curb associated medical and rehabilitation costs. Groups served: Substance abuse treatment providers; persons with chronic mental illness; substance abusers Publications: Final report; journal articles. Descriptors: Mental illness, Rehabilitation services, Substance abuse.
