Objectives: To study the relationship between substance abuse counseling and the elimination of barriers to employment following traumatic brain injury (TBI); to test two behavioral treatment interventions: a systematic motivational model and a skills-based behavioral model.
Abstract: The project will identify the relationship between substance abuse counseling and the elimination of barriers to employment following TBI; identify the role of motivational patterns of substance use among survivors of TBI; test the effectiveness of substance abuse treatment directed at changing motivational patterns; identify the importance of developing coping skills and alternative reinforcers in substance abuse prevention and establishing a life style incompatible with the use of alcohol or other drugs among persons TBI; assess the relationship between the role of the family in the use of alcohol and other drugs by persons with TBI; provide substance abuse prevention and treatment information to patients, families, rehabilitation staff, and supported employment programs; and provide multidisciplinary staff training on substance abuse prevention strategies and treatment techniques that will improve rehabilitation services and outcomes. The project will field test two interventions at a variety of settings, including inpatient, outpatient, and supported employment programs. The two behavioral treatment interventions to be tested are a systematic motivational model and a skills-based behavioral model. The systematic motivational model will be field tested at three sites in the Chicago area that are under the auspices of Schwab Rehabilitation Center, including an inpatient head injury program, an outpatient community-based treatment site, and a supported employment site. The skills-based behavioral model will be field tested in three community-based supported employment programs in three counties in Wisconsin. The project will include the development of training programs using both treatment interventions for multidisciplinary treatment teams; the development of training and educational materials for staff, patients, and family members; and the dissemination of project research and materials to head injury facilities throughout the United States.
